The Silk Road

The Silk Road was never a single paved highway but a shifting network of caravan tracks and sea lanes spanning some 6,000 kilometres. Its overland heart connected the Chinese capital of Chang'an (modern Xi'an) through the oasis towns of Central Asia to Persia, the Levant, and ultimately Rome. The routes take their modern name from silk, the luxury Chinese textile whose method of production China guarded as a closely held secret.

Regular long-distance exchange opened up under China's Han dynasty. Around 130 BCE the envoy Zhang Qian returned from the western regions with knowledge of distant kingdoms, and the Han pushed westward to secure the trade corridors. From that point silk, lacquerware, and later paper flowed west, while horses, glass, gold, wool, and new crops flowed east.

Goods were only part of the story. The Silk Road was one of history's great highways for ideas. Buddhism travelled from India through Central Asia into China along these routes, carried by monks and merchants and expressed in the great cave-temple complexes such as Dunhuang. Later, Islam, Manichaeism, Nestorian Christianity, technologies, artistic styles, and scientific knowledge all moved along the same paths.

The overland trade reached new heights under the Tang dynasty (618–907), when Chang'an became one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities, and again under the Mongol Empire of the 13th and 14th centuries, whose unified control of Eurasia — the Pax Mongolica — made travel safer. It was in this era that the Venetian Marco Polo famously journeyed east and described the wealth of China to European readers.

The overland routes declined from the 15th century, as the Mongol order fragmented and as European powers opened direct maritime routes to Asia, shifting the balance of world trade to the oceans. But the Silk Road's legacy endured: it had knit distant civilizations into a shared, interconnected world long before the modern age, and its exchanges shaped the art, faith, cuisine, and technology of half the planet.
