The Age of Exploration
In the 15th century, Portuguese and Spanish sailors began pushing beyond the limits of the known world, driven by the search for direct sea routes to the spices and riches of Asia, by religious zeal, and by advances in ships, navigation, and cartography. Portugal, under the patronage of figures like Prince Henry, worked its way down the coast of Africa, and in 1498 Vasco da Gama reached India by sailing around its southern tip.15世纪,葡萄牙与西班牙的水手开始突破已知世界的边界。
In 1492, sailing west for Spain in search of Asia, Christopher Columbus instead reached islands in the Caribbean. He had not found a new route to the East but had opened sustained contact between the Old World and the Americas — continents that had developed in near-total isolation from one another for thousands of years. In 1519–1522 an expedition begun by Ferdinand Magellan completed the first circumnavigation of the globe.1492年,哥伦布为西班牙向西航行以寻找亚洲,却抵达了加勒比海的岛屿。
The consequences were world-changing. The 'Columbian Exchange' moved crops, animals, people, and pathogens across the Atlantic in both directions: maize, potatoes, tomatoes, and cacao spread to the Old World, while wheat, horses, cattle, and sugar came to the Americas. This exchange transformed diets and populations across the globe — but it also carried Old World diseases such as smallpox to the Americas.
For the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, contact was catastrophic. Old World epidemics, against which they had no immunity, killed a large share of the population within a century — a demographic collapse that, together with conquest by the Spanish and Portuguese, shattered civilizations such as the Aztec and Inca empires and enabled the seizure of vast territories.
The age also gave rise to the transatlantic slave trade, which forcibly transported millions of enslaved Africans to labour in the mines and plantations of the Americas — one of history's greatest crimes and forced migrations. Out of these voyages emerged the first truly global economy and the great European maritime empires, binding four continents into networks of trade, wealth, and exploitation whose consequences still shape the modern world.
